"frequently Asked Questions About Travel Insurance In Australia" - Last December, we did a series of webinars on COVID and travel insurance. So much so that we took the question and created a web page to collect all the questions and answers into FAQs about travel insurance during this pandemic.
How do the new restrictions on entering countries imposed by the Government of Canada affect your travel policies?
"frequently Asked Questions About Travel Insurance In Australia"
The government has introduced new restrictions requiring travelers entering the country to quarantine in hotels at their own expense. The new rules go into effect immediately and will last until the end of April 2021. There is also a mandatory COVID test required on arrival in Canada. Your travel insurance policy will NOT cover costs related to quarantine or a COVID test.

If you return to Canada before your policy expires, you may be eligible for an early refund. Please read the refund section of your policy for specific details pertaining to you. This site uses cookies to provide you with a better user experience. By continuing, you accept our cookie policy.

Are insurance providers rewriting their terms and conditions in the face of the coronavirus crisis? Photo: Rawpixel Ltd/Alamy
I nsurers and warranty providers seem to be rewriting their terms and conditions to avoid paying during the coronavirus pandemic. RP of London received an invitation from his online travel agent to purchase cancellation protection when he booked a hotel room last December. The cover, provided by RoomerFlex, promises an 80% refund on cancellations "for any reason, no questions asked" which is a relief as Covid-19 pays for RP travel next month.
The part about no questions is true. RoomerFlex has decided to cancel all claims, regardless of cause, due to “unprecedented” circumstances. Apparently, the pandemic is the reason the fine print forgot to mention. As RoomerFlex works in partnership with a number of travel booking platforms, a large number of customers find that the only refund they will get is an £8 premium – which RoomerFlex says can take up to 150 days to process.
The Financial Conduct Authority, which regulates insurance in the UK, said it was helpless because RoomerFlex is a US company that sells canceled rooms to fund its guarantee and offers a service rather than insurance. Roomer was contacted for comment.

Landlords who purchased the premier lease guarantee service offered by Leader's rental agency have also been left out. This service promises to cover rent payments if the tenant is in arrears. AN lives in the Philippines with income from rental property in Kent. He pays £36.86 per month for bail and assumes it will cover him if his tenants fall behind on rent due to the pandemic. However, like RoomerFlex, Leaders have written to landlords informing them that the guarantee guarantees nothing when it comes to pandemics, even if the pandemic is not mentioned on the exclusion list. Unlike RoomerFlex, it doesn't offer to refund sizable coverage costs to those who now find themselves unprotected. Leaders were contacted for comment.
LJ and his wife Haywards Heath purchased a standard £95 multi-trip travel insurance policy from Zurich for their May trip to Thailand. “The summary indicates that we are not covered for travel [if] contrary to advice from the Foreign and Commonwealth Office [FCO],” he wrote. “It looks like this will apply to us, but the website now indicates that Standard policyholders will not be covered. That puts us in a catch-22 situation.
That it is not possible to list all possible exceptions, so customers are advised of the specific circumstances that include cancellations. Given how much insurance companies rely on the fine print to get out of claims, this isn't good enough. In response, Zurich directed me to the fine print. On page 68 of the information document issued to LJ, protection is mentioned for amended FCO advice, but it only applies to those with additional, more expensive policies. This somewhat weakens Zurich's claim that it cannot cover all possible exceptions. The Financial Ombudsman Service can decide if this is unfair.
